HOW DOES LACK OF PERIOD SUPPLIES AFFECT OUR COMMUNITY?

1 in 4 women will struggle to purchase period supplies due to lack of income. You read that right: one in four women will grapple with period poverty right here in Greater Cincinnati.

THE IMPACTS OF PERIOD POVERTY DON’T STOP AT INDIVIDUAL WOMEN, THEY AFFECT OUR COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE.

When menstruators can’t afford the supplies they need, they resort to alternative methods to handle their period. Oftentimes using old diapers, t-shirts, washcloths, or even paper towels to manage their flow. Others will simply go without any protection and stay home so as not to suffer an embarrassing public mishap due to not being able to afford basic period supplies. Regardless of how women handle their period, period poverty can have lasting negative effects on her career, personal life, health, education, family, and community. When women can’t take on their daily responsibilities, the whole community suffers.

Women and girls Who Experience Period Poverty May:

  • Skip school, putting them behind on their studies and increasing their risk of dropping out altogether.
  • Miss work or be unable to hold a steady job due to poor attendance.
  • Skip or avoid social events with friends and family
  • Experience health concerns like increased urinary tract infections (UTIs), yeast infections, & increased risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).
